“The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, Gang aft agley” (often go awry). This from a poem by Robert Burns entitled “To A Mouse”. I had sworn off theatre for a much needed rest and restore. A dear friend in Theatre Kent was gleefully and anxiously preparing to direct Of Mice and Men and in an unfortunate turn of events had to withdraw to face some serious family illness. People make plans…..God laughs. So we both find ourselves on completely different paths than our best laid schemes. I would like to dedicate this production to Angie and Bill Presant and their son Steven and family and pray for their success.
Theatre is so wonderful, magical and mystical and teaches us so much. It gives us the opportunity to experience vicariously every possible human experience. We try that experience on, we get to “wear it awhile”, see how it feels and we always walk away enlightened and just a little better prepared for how we will handle the endless indignities of this life. If the cast and crew do our job we hope you will experience the plight of our migrant workers as they persevere through these indignities with themes of loneliness, marginalization, poverty, prejudice, compassion, companionship and love.
I am compelled to offer a warning that language in this work may and MUST be offensive to many. The use of racial slurs were unacceptable then and are unacceptable now, however were tolerated then and thankfully not tolerated now.
